The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations.

WMO promotes cooperation in the establishment of networks for making meteorological, climatological, hydrological and geophysical observations, as well as the exchange, processing and standardization of related data, and assists technology transfer, training and research.

 It also fosters collaboration between the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of its Members and furthers the application of meteorology to public weather services, agriculture, aviation, shipping, the environment, water issues and the mitigation of the impacts of natural disasters.

मौसम की महत्ता समझी जा सकती है। असल में मौसम और जलवायु को किसी सीमा से नहीं बांधा जा सकता है। इसलिए मौसम पृथ्वी पर उपस्थित समस्त जीवों को प्रभावित करता है। इसी बात को ध्यान में रखकर प्रत्येक वर्ष 23 मार्च को विश्व मौसम दिवस मनाया जाता है। विश्व मौसम संघ द्वारा विश्व मौसम दिवस की अवधारणा रखी गई थी। आज विश्व मौसम संघ के 191 देश सदस्य हैं।

सन् 1980 से 2007 के दौरान करीब साढे सात हजार प्राकृति आपदाओं से 20 लाख लोगों की जान चली गई। इन आपदाओं से करीब 1.2 खरब की संपत्ति की हानि हुई। जान-माल की हानि में 70 से 80 प्रतिशत घटनाएँ मौसम और जलवायु से संबंधित रही है। ऐसी घटनाओं में चक्रवात, सूखा, बाढ़ और इनसे उत्पन्न महामारियां आदि शामिल हैं। वैश्विक सहयोग के द्वारा मौसम और जलवायु के सटीक पूर्वानुमान के प्रयासों से हम जान-माल को होने वाले नुकसान में कमी ला सकते हैं।

इस दिवस पर देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में बैठकें, संगोष्ठियां और अन्य कार्यक्रम होते हैं जिनमें मौसमविज्ञानी आपस में विचार एवं अनुभव बांटते हैं तथा इसपर चर्चा करते हैं कि इस उभरते विज्ञान के ज्ञान का न केवल भारतीयों बल्कि मानवजाति के कल्याण के लिए कैसे बेहतर उपयोग किया जाए।

 मौसम पर्यवेक्षण के लिए अंतरिक्ष में बड़ी संख्या में उपग्रह तैनात करने के अलावा भारतीय वैज्ञानिक मौसम और जलविज्ञान अध्ययन के लिए 1981 से ही अंटार्कटिका पर जाते रहे हैं।
